In this 400th anniversary year of the death of Sir Francis Bacon, we will visit his descendant’s residence on the northern outskirts of St Albans.  Built in the neo-Palladian style, the new Gorhambury House was commissioned by James, 3rd Viscount Grimston and constructed in the years 1777-84 by Sir Robert Taylor, following the demise of the original property owned by Francis’s father, Sir Nicholas Bacon, Lord Keeper of the Great Seal to Queen Elizabeth I.

The last decade has seen significant, award-winning restoration of the property, overseen by Viscountess Grimston.  See: www.countrylife.co.uk/out-and-about/best-in-class-this-years-georgian-group-architectural-award-winners-revealed. We will make our own way to Gorhambury, meeting at the House no later than 9.45am.  Please note, latecomers will not be admitted to the House or gardens.

On arrival we will be divided into two groups with separate House and Garden tours.  Refreshments will be served part way through the visit.  Suitable footwear will be needed for walking around the Garden, with overshoes provided inside the House if the weather is poor.

Tickets will cost £48 per person with numbers limited to 30 members of the Friends.  Specifically, two tickets per Joint member OR two tickets per Single member.
