On Friday, 13 September 13, Andrew Lucas, the esteemed former Master of the Music at St Albans Cathedral, was honored with an Honorary Doctorate of Music during the University of Hertfordshire's graduation ceremony held at the Cathedral. This accolade was awarded in recognition of Andrew's remarkable 26-year service to music in St Albans and throughout the county of Hertfordshire.

Dr Lucas’s contributions to music education and community engagement were highlighted as pivotal in enriching the musical landscape of the region. His efforts have significantly impacted the lives of young people across Hertfordshire by fostering a love for music and providing invaluable learning experiences. Through a strong partnership with the Mid Herts Music Service, Dr Lucas facilitated the involvement of primary school pupils in the choral education program. This initiative has benefited approximately 12,000 children, offering them the opportunity to visit the Cathedral multiple times a year and immerse themselves in choral music.

In addition, over 300 cathedral choristers have received musical guidance and mentorship under Lucas’s tenure, further underscoring his dedication to nurturing young talent.

Jo Kelly-Moore, Dean of St Albans, expressed her enthusiasm for the occasion, stating, “It was a joy and a privilege to celebrate with Andrew as he received very well-deserved recognition for his contribution to music in the United Kingdom and beyond.”

The ceremony not only honored Andrew Lucas’s distinguished career but also celebrated his lasting impact on the community, highlighting the significant role he has played in promoting and advancing music education.
