Cathedral Cycle Relay 2025 St Albans Cathedral proudly took part once again in the annual Cathedrals Cycle Route Relay, a nationwide event connecting cathedrals across England through sustainable travel and fellowship. On Wednesday evening, the Cathedral warmly welcomed the team from Chelmsford Cathedral at the close of Evensong. The baton was ceremoniously handed over to our own team by nine-year-old John, a pupil at Chelmsford Cathedral School, who completed his first ever cathedral-to-cathedral ride – and his longest cycle to date – accompanied by his mum Fiona, Anne Locke of the Association of English Cathedrals, and veteran CCR rider Terry Smith. The Chelmsford team leaving Chelmsford Cathedral Dean Jo greeting the Chelmsford team at St Albans, with John poised to hand the baton over to Phil The Chelmsford to St Albans stretch covered just over 50 miles, much of it along scenic riverside paths and converted railway lines. Photos from the day capture the spirit of the journey, the joy of arrival, and the moment our team took up the baton for the next leg. Early this morning, St Albans' riders set off for London, heading toward the iconic St Paul’s Cathedral. This marks another step on the Cathedrals Cycle Route – a 2,000-mile loop linking every Church of England cathedral – designed to promote greener travel, mental and physical wellbeing, and spiritual reflection. This year’s St Albans team included familiar faces: Gemma Jones and Phil Waller, who both took part in the inaugural Cathedrals Cycle Relay in 2021. Their ongoing commitment reflects the spirit of the relay – bringing people together in community, faith, and action. Phil is also using this year’s ride to raise funds for Christian Aid. At 84% of his target, he's cycling 25 miles from St Albans to London to support the charity’s vital humanitarian work, particularly in areas like Guatemala where communities face hunger and displacement due to the climate crisis. It’s been a privilege to host the baton and send our team on their way. Go well, Phil, Gemma and all!" The Cathedrals Cycle Route continues to grow in reach and significance, offering everyone – from experienced cyclists to first-timers – a way to connect with sacred places and each other.
