The CEO of the national Cathedral Music Trust, Jonathan Mayes, arrived at St Albans Cathedral last Saturday afternoon in time for Evensong.

Having cycled to us from Oxford Cathedral that day Cathedral community member, Phil Waller, met Jonathan in Tring and completed the last part of the cycle with him. Dean Jo welcomed the cyclists as we were Cathedral number 32 in Jonathan’s challenge to visit all the places which the Trust has supported, and in so doing raise the profile of the importance of the English Choral Tradition.

St Albans Cathedral is very grateful for a grant from Cathedral Music Trust to help fund the music outreach work being led by our Assistant Director of Music, Dewi Rees.  Last Monday Dewi was at Dunstable Priory leading a music experience day in partnership with local schools.  This comes at the same time as Cathedral Music Trust is seeking to have the English Choral Tradition recognised as part of the UK Government’s first ever national inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Also known as Living Heritage, the resulting inventory will help to celebrate cultural traditions and highlight their contribution to communities and the economy.
