The Nave of St Albans Cathedral was filled with music, colour, and pure joy on Tuesday 24 June as Electric Umbrella brought its energy, passion, and powerful message of inclusion to life through a truly unforgettable event.

You may have to squint but have a look at the full Nave of students from all different schools! Not a seat unfilled!

Electric Umbrella in full swing - a Nave full of fun and excitement.

Hundreds of pupils from across Hertfordshire and beyond (all the way North!) — including children of all ages from mainstream schools and SEND learners of all ages — came together under the soaring arches of the Cathedral for “Shine a Light”, a spectacular musical celebration led by Electric Umbrella’s inspiring Super Group. The event aimed to break down barriers, foster creativity, and shine a spotlight on the strength of diversity and unity.

Electric Umbrella, who recently captivated the nation on Britain’s Got Talent, have long been known for creating vibrant, live music experiences with people with learning disabilities. Today’s event took that vision to new heights, blending heart, humour, and harmony in a setting as powerful as the message it conveyed.

From the very beginning, there was magic in the air. As students arrived, they were welcomed by the uplifting sounds of organist Dale, a young musician supported by Electric Umbrella, who filled the space with an eclectic mix of music. With everything from Mozart to The Beatles, and even an original Electric Umbrella tune or two, Dale set the tone for a day that would be both moving and memorable.

“What an amazing event – I’m almost lost for words!” said Steve Clarke, Education Officer at the Cathedral. “To see so many people joining together to celebrate music and unity in such a joyful way was truly inspirational. I’m sure today will live long in the memories of all who were here.”

The event was not just a concert — it was a community experience. Young voices rang out in song, hands clapped, feet danced, and the spirit of inclusion was tangible. The Super Group led interactive performances that had the entire audience singing along, dancing, and most importantly, smiling. From the Cathedral’s early morning setup to the final song of the day, the event radiated positivity, acceptance, and connection.

As the last note echoed beneath the great arches of the Cathedral and the students began their journey home, one thing was clear: “Shine a Light” didn’t just brighten the building — it lit up hearts and minds across St Albans.

Thank you to Electric Umbrella for an incredible day.
