On Sunday 2  February, the Dean of St Albans dedicated six new silver candlesticks on the high altar in the Cathedral during Eucharist on the Feast of Candlemas, which marks the end of the Christmas season.

The cost of these six beautiful 24” tall pieces, made by silversmith Richard Taylor and supplied by Langfords of London, was partly met by the Friends of St Albans Cathedral and also by a generous legacy from the late Michael Clasby, a former trustee of the Friends.

The Friends, an independent charity supporting the Cathedral financially and practically, wanted to mark the 75th anniversary of their re-founding in 1949 which was celebrated last year. Contributing to the purchase of these candlesticks was seen by the Friends as a perfect opportunity to leave a lasting legacy to the Cathedral. Michael’s name is engraved on one of the candlesticks in his memory and the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the Friends on another, with the Alban cross engraved on all six.
