St Albans Cathedral marked the beginning of a new chapter in its rich musical tradition with a solemn and joyous Evensong on Sunday, 29 September, celebrating the Feast of St Michael and All Angels. The service welcomed the admission of new choristers, the appointment of senior choristers, and the commissioning of William Fox as the new Director of Music.

Four new choristers were officially admitted during the service: Reuben, Olivia, Elodie, and Leyla, who received their surplices and were presented with admission cards and books. The Dean highlighted the importance of their role in the ceremony, saying, "A chorister helps lead others in worship through their singing, offering their gifts to glorify God."

In addition to the new admissions, several existing choristers were appointed to senior positions, taking on responsibilities as mentors to their peers. Nova, Amelia, Albert, Leo, Beau, Eva, and Lucille were each presented with a medal by the Dean in recognition of their leadership roles. The senior choristers pledged to guide and support their fellow choir members with fairness and devotion.

The combined choirs gave the music an extra sparkle, adding to the occasion. Opening with the Lay Clerks’ singing of Te Splendor Virtus for the feast of St Michael, the Cathedral Choir soared through Judith Weir’s My Guardian Angel and lifted spirits with the radiant canticles in D by George Dyson, all under new Director of Music William Fox.

"I am loving being here and am hugely grateful for the warm welcome I have received. "

William Fox, Director of Music

The service began with the commissioning of William Fox as the Director of Music. The Dean welcomed William, saying, "Music is at the heart of the life, worship, and witness of St Albans Cathedral, and we are truly blessed by those who offer their talents to support it. We are excited to welcome William as he leads us into a new era. We look forward to all that lies ahead."

William Fox expressed his excitement for the future, saying, “It was wonderful to have the boys, girls, and Lay Clerks of the Cathedral Choir together for Michaelmas Evensong to mark our new choir year, to welcome our new choristers, and to admit senior choristers. The service also marked the start of my time as Director of Music—I am loving being here and am hugely grateful for the warm welcome I have received. Thank you!”
