A Fortnight of Meaningful Sound

At St Albans Cathedral, the bells have been especially busy—ringing out over three remarkable occasions showcasing how our bells ring for joy, for sorrow and in celebration.

Sunday 13 April: A Bishop’s Final Ring

On Saturday 13 April, some of the Cathedral’s ringers were honoured to complete a quarter peal of Grandsire Caters alongside The Right Reverend Dr Alan Smith, Bishop of St Albans. Despite not having rung that method in over 15 years, Bishop Alan stepped in for what may be his final ring from the tower ahead of his retirement.

The band completed 1278 changes, a feat of stamina, skill, and symbolism - no mean feat for a Bishop who has not run this for 15 years! With thanks and warm wishes for his 16 years of ministry, the ringers marked the moment with deep appreciation and a joyful noise.

Sunday 27 April: In Thanksgiving for Pope Francis

Just two weeks later, the bells tolled again in the true spirit of ecumenism—this time in solemn thanksgiving for the life of Pope Francis. A quarter peal (minimum 1250 separate changes on the bells) of 1260 Grandsire Royal, composed by Benjamin J Waller, was rung in 48 minutes, led by conductor Claire C Nicholson.

Thursday 8 May: Ringing for VE Day

And there is still more to come. On Thursday 8 May at 6.30pm, St Albans will take part in the National Ring Out in Celebration for VE Day, where the Cathedral bells will join bell towers across the nation in ringing out and marking peace, resilience and the enduring legacy of Victory in Europe 80 years on.
