Robed and ready: new chorister admitted A special moment took place at Choral Evensong on Saturday as the newest chorister at St Albans Cathedral was formally admitted. The new chorister, Greyson, was presented by Assistant Director of Music Dewi Rees, and the admission was conducted by Dean Jo, in a tradition that also saw Greyson vested by Leo, a senior chorister who will conclude his time in the choir this summer. Mr Rees, who conducted the Cathedral Choir for the service, said, "After his hard work and dedication as a probationer it was lovely to see Greyson formally admitted as a chorister on Saturday. We are looking forward to seeing his continued progress in the choir." Dean Jo, Assistant Director of Music Dewi Rees, Greyson, Leo, the Revd Vanessa Jefferson Leo’s role in vesting Greyson captured something of the steady rhythm of choir life, where older choristers quietly guide the newer ones. During Greyson's time as a probationer he has stood beside Leo and learned from his experience. As the Dean admitted Greyson as a full chorister, Leo placed the white surplice over Greyson's head in a very poignant moment—as one chapter nears its end, another begins. The Very Revd Jo Kelly-Moore, Dean of St Albans, shared: "Worship is the at the essence of our life as a Cathedral and six days a week our Cathedral choristers lead us in worship in their singing of Choral Evensong and Choral Eucharist. The commitment they and their families make is a large one, for which we are very grateful. At the same time what we also know is that being a chorister is an extremely rewarding, and life changing, experience. It offers the gift of world class music education and opportunities to sing in a wide variety of places, both nationally and internationally. Alongside that, it is a place to make lifelong friendships." As Leo prepares to conclude his chorister journey with valedictions in the summer, the Cathedral community gives thanks for his contribution the leadership the senior choristers have shown. And for Greyson, this moment marks the exciting start of his own musical journey. William Fox, Director of Music, added, "We are delighted to welcome Grayson to the ranks this month and we look forward to seeing him flourish in our choir in the years to come."
