St Albans Cathedral hosted its ever popular Roman Festival last week, welcoming pupils from across the county to enjoy a fun-packed day of learning. After being warmly welcomed by our resident Roman Legionnaire, the children experienced a carousel of events, including dramatically retelling the story of St Alban, creating and tasting traditional Roman recipes in the Villa kitchen, and learning about archaeology whilst handling a variety of historic artefacts. Festival organiser Claire Frearson, said: ‘The Roman Festival is the perfect way for teachers to launch their Roman Topic with their class. The Blanket Dig session gets children thinking about how we know all about the Romans, as they take on the role of archaeologists exploring artefacts from the modern day all the way back to the Stone Age. They learn about the impact of the Romans on St Albans by becoming characters from the story of St Alban and retelling the events of Alban’s martyrdom. There is also the opportunity to enter the lavish surroundings of a Roman triclinium, making and then eating some Roman delicacies. All of this really brings their new topic alive for them and sparks their curiosity to learn more about the Romans back at school.
