This Sunday we launched The Moses Project here at St Albans Cathedral and joyfully filled our first Moses basket with baby and new parent essentials.

The Moses Project began at a church in Ipswich, designed to support expectant parents who may struggle to gather all the essential items for their newborn. Here at the Cathedral, we’ve teamed up with Baby Bank Herts at Verso Vineyard Church in St Albans, which supports new parents across our city and the surrounding areas. All referrals for a Moses basket come through a professional working directly with the family, such as a midwife, health visitor, or social worker.

Each Moses basket provided by the project is filled with items essential for caring for a newborn, including clothing (such as hats, cardigans, mitts, and babygrows), sleepsuits, blankets, nappies, baby wipes, toiletries for both baby and mother, bath toys, baby books, and a cuddly toy.

How Can You Help?

Once each term, we will be asking our congregation for donations—whether items or monetary contributions that allow us to purchase essentials—to support new parents and their babies. With a fantastic start this Sunday, we look forward to the next Moses Basket Days, scheduled for Sunday 16 March, and Sunday 15 June 2025. The team will be in the south transept before and after all Sunday services on those dates.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to filling our first Moses basket! Please consider donating an item for the next collection day to help ensure that all new parents in our community have the support they need to care for their babies well.
