Students Celebrated at Special Evensong Learning has been at the heart of the life of faith here since the first foundation of a monastic community by King Offa of Mercia in 793.A century after its foundation, King Alfred the Great — a renowned scholar and encourager of education — exhorted his people to follow in the footsteps of learning and turn their minds to wisdom. More than a thousand years later, St Albans Cathedral continues in that same tradition. On Sunday 5 October, the Cathedral community gathered for a special Choral Evensong celebrating the Adult Learning that has taken place over the past year – from talks and courses to language and literature groups, and the tireless dedication of the volunteers who care for the Library and Archives. It was a particular joy to celebrate the achievements of students completing modules and courses as part of the St Albans Certificate in Theology (SACT) and SACT Plus. The annual service, steeped in the Cathedral’s long tradition of learning and faith, brought together students, tutors, families, and friends in thanksgiving for a year of study, discovery, and spiritual growth. They were joined by Bishop Rob Gillion as guest preacher, who offered encouragement to all who continue to learn. In total, twelve students were recognised for completing courses towards the Certificate, and two – Cheryl Benfield and Stephen Humphreys – were awarded the full Certificate in Theology. Fr Kevin Walton, Canon Chancellor, said: “Learning and faith go hand in hand. Our Study Centre continues a centuries-old tradition of theological reflection here at St Albans, offering people space to question, explore, and deepen their understanding of God and the Church.” Caroline Godden, Adult Learning Officer, added: “It’s always a joy to see students reach this milestone. Our students come from such different backgrounds, and it’s wonderful to see the richness that this brings to discussion and conversation in their courses. Their dedication to their study, and the support and encouragement from our excellent tutors, is a real testimony to our belief that theological study really is for everyone.” Following the service, awardees and guests gathered for a reception in the Welcome Centre, kindly sponsored by the Education Trust. For those inspired to begin their own journey of learning and faith, the Cathedral offers a wide range of talks, courses, workshops, and reading groups throughout the year – from theology, history, and literature to art, heritage crafts, and ancient languages. 👉 Find out more about Adult Learning and how to get involved:Find out more 👉 Sign up to our Adult Learning mailing list:Sign up Manage Cookie Preferences
