St Albans Cathedral is proud to celebrate the recent achievements of several of its former Organ Scholars, who continue to make a significant impact in the world of music.

James (Jamie) McVinnie, who served as Organ Scholar at the Cathedral from 2002–2003, will be performing at the prestigious BBC Proms this year—one of the most high-profile classical music events in the world. We are also delighted to announce that Jamie will return to St Albans Cathedral for a special organ recital in the Nave on Sunday 3 August at 3pm. This promises to be a memorable occasion and a wonderful opportunity to hear one of our most distinguished alumni perform in the space where his career began to flourish.

Another of our former scholars, Richard Tanner, who held the Organ Scholarship from 1992–1993, has recently been appointed Director of Music at St Thomas Church, Fifth Avenue, New York—one of the most prominent church music positions in the United States. This is a remarkable achievement and a testament to Richard’s exceptional musicianship and leadership.

“The long-running Organ Scholarship at St Albans Cathedral is a great post for an organist in the early stages of their career to gain experience working in our busy music programme. We are proud that so many former organ scholars have gone onto great things in the world of music and beyond, and this is represented at the highest level in Richard and Jamie’s recent news.”

William Fox, Director of Music, reflecting on the programme success.

The Cathedral’s Organ Scholarship next becomes vacant in September 2026, with auditions taking place in September and October 2025. Those interested in applying are encouraged to keep an eye on the Cathedral’s website for further details.

We give thanks for the lasting contribution of our Organ Scholars past and present - and look forward to welcoming the next generation of young musicians to St Albans.
