VE Day 80th Anniversary celebrations at the Cathedral Our Cathedral VE Day commemorations began at noon as a busy Cathedral fell silent to join in the national two minutes silence. During the course of the day visitors to the Cathedral were able to see the Sopwell Knitters de Havilland Mosquitto, as well as a World War II jeep. At 5pm we hosted a special Commemorative Evensong, sung by Abbey Singers, to which we were delighted to welcome the His Majesty’s High Sheriff of Hertfordshire, Nicholas Buxton, and The Right Worshipful Mayor of the City and District of St Albans, Councillor Jamie Day. At the conclusion of Evensong, the Cathedral Bell Ringers joined in the National Ring out in Celebration and a good crowd gathered in the Cathedral precinct to hear them. The High Sheriff and Mayor were pleased to join the ringers in the Bell Tower. The day concluded with west end of the Cathedral lit red, white and blue. Hundreds of people came to the Cathedral for these important commemorations. We look forward now to our VE Day dance, tomorrow evening. Manage Cookie Preferences
