VJ Day remembered in St Albans At 12 noon on 15 August the Precentor led a commemoration of the 80th Anniversary of VJ Day at the war memorial, incorporating the national two minutes silence and prayers for peace. Victory over Japan Day marked the end of World War Two. The Mayor of St Albans Cllr Teresa Heritage laid a wreath and John Gauthier a veteran led the Exhortation and Kohima Epitaph. Despite the heat a good gathering of people came together to observe this important milestone. A prayer for the 80th anniversary of VJ Day: God of the nations, our refuge and our dwelling place, we remember with thanksgiving those who service achieved Allied victory in the Pacific, and hold before you all those who suffered from the devastation and trauma of war. May their memory inspire us to learn from the atrocities of the past and to pursue peace, justice and reconciliation in our own generation; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
