Over the past two Saturdays, St Albans Cathedral has been filled with the sound of new voices as children and families joined us for our Be a Chorister for a Day events for 2026.

On Saturday 31 January, over 50 girls took part, followed by a boys’ event on Saturday 7 February attended by 30 boys. Across both days, children were invited to step into the life of a Cathedral chorister — not as spectators, but as singers, learners, and worshippers.

Participants enjoyed singing games, learning new repertoire, and rehearsing alongside members of the Cathedral Choir. There was time to explore the Cathedral itself, meet current choristers, and ask plenty of questions about what it’s really like to sing in this extraordinary place.

For many, the highlight came at Evensong, where the participants joined the Cathedral Choir.

The Dean of St Albans, Jo Kelly-Moore, reflected on the weekends:

“It has been a joy to welcome so many young singers into the Cathedral and to see their confidence grow over the course of the afternoon. Music is central to our worship, and these days offer a generous and joyful introduction to that tradition.”

William Fox, Director of Music, added:

“Our Be a Chorister for a Day events are annual highlights, and this year was no exception. Well done to our fabulous young singers for taking part!”

Families who were unable to attend this year are warmly encouraged to look out for future opportunities to discover life as a Cathedral chorister next year. Find out more about being a cathedral chorister here www.stalbanscathedral.org/choristers
