Governance Appointments to Chapter and Committees The Cathedral plays an important role in growing the local economy to support visitor growth and residents’ engagement with their local city. Our rich programme of events, concerts, exhibitions and special services all contribute to the delivery of this priority and the Cathedral’s financial sustainability. St Albans Cathedral is an independent charitable organisation and receives no regular direct funding from the Government. It costs £6,000 a day to keep the Cathedral open. We are committed to remaining a place of free entry and attracted in excess of 600,000 visitors in 2025 from the United Kingdom and abroad. The nature of who we are means we are a people-focused organisation, and it is our people who are the driving force in bringing the stones of our historic building alive. The work of the Cathedral is sustained by around 50 staff and some 550 volunteers. At the end of 2023 the Cathedral came under new governance arrangements as a result of the Cathedrals Measure 2021, becoming a registered charity with the Charity Commission. We also revisited our vision and strategic priorities to help direct our work going forward into 2024 and beyond. The Cathedral’s governance bodies played an important part in the discernment of these priorities and will continue to have a key role in their working out into action.
