Latin Reading Group: Discover a Glimpse of the Early Church Join our online Latin Reading Group and dip into the works of the early Christian writers. Read in the original Latin the saints and scholars who shaped Christian thought from the Middle East and North Africa all the way to the British Isles. A short Latin text will be distributed prior to each session for those who like to prepare in advance, but there will be plenty of support for those who don’t have time to read it ahead of the session. We will look at the life and times of the writer as well diving into the writings. All are welcome. June's text is taken from a play written by Hrotsvitha of Gandersheim (c. 935–975+) - a 10th-century Saxon canoness, poet, and dramatist, recognized as the first known female playwright in Western history and the first post-classical playwright. Living in Gandersheim Abbey, she wrote Latin plays, legends, and histories, adopting the style of Roman playwright Terence to create Christian moral stories. In this text, the eponymous Christian noblewoman brings her three daughters (Faith, Hope and Charity) to Rome where their adherence to their faith in the face of the Emperor Hadrian doesn’t end well. We'll start with a re-cap of the first Act, which was translated by this group in April. As usual, participants are encouraged to prepare what they can and we’ll tackle the rest together.
