Join us as a unique medieval manuscript from St Albans Abbey scriptorium is brought to life for the first time in 800 years.

In the atmospheric setting of the Cathedral, experience the music from this manuscript being performed in the place where the twelfth-century monks writing it intended it to be heard.

Dr Thomas Phillips will introduce the manuscript and reveal what it tells us about music, worship, and daily life at St Albans Abbey as it rose to national prominence. Live performances given by musicians Andrew Carwood and James Preston of chants from the book will transport you back to the sounds that shaped medieval worship.

Please note that this event is being held in-person only and will not be recorded.

About Dr Thomas Phillips | Thomas is a Research Associate at the University of Cambridge on the project ‘BENEDICAMUS: Musical and Poetic Creativity for a Unique Moment in the Western Christian Liturgy, c.1000–1500’, funded by a European Research Council Consolidator grant and led by Dr Catherine A. Bradley.
